Development of databases for prioritization and evaluation of novel drug targets

What is target prioritazation and why?

  • Target prioritization which means to identify suitable targets (such as genes, proteins, non-peptide gene products and pathways) for characterization, is one of the most critical steps in biology, particularly in annotating gene function, drug discovery and understanding molecular bases of diseases. Here, the prioritization does not attempt to order the candidates but to distinguish or to narrow down fewer candidates from a lot of them. We have proposed a prioritization protocol using TargetMine (Chen et al., 2011).
  • In specific drug discovery projects, our predictions have been verified experimentally and led to new therapeutic strategies. Some of our databases and software tools have been commercialized and used widely to characterize drug targets and related proteins.
