Investigating the relationships between gut microbiota and life style: the development of an integrated analysis platform

  • The intestinal microbiota is known to play a variety of roles including the digestion of foods, the prevention of invasion of pathogenic bacteria, and the activation of the immune system. Recently, dysbiosis has been reported to cause various diseases. From these findings, it is expected that changes in the intestinal microbial flora can be used as a biomarker for dysbiosis-related diseases, and as an indicator of health. However, it is difficult to investigate the effect of the intestinal microbial flora on hosts, because it has large individual variations, possibly caused by differences in the genetic background and the environmental backgrounds such as diet and lifestyle. To overcome these problems, a large-scale cohort study should be required to collect not only the gut microbiome data but also various metadata. We constructed a pipeline that provides more efficient and reliable results for large sequence data from a large cohort. In addition, we are now in the process of analyzing to elucidate the relationship between gut microbiome and phenotypes such as living habits.
